Nanuk TSA-Approved Case Lock

This is the best design for a case lock that I have seen. I love it, but will it fit case xyz123 if it's not a Nanuk? Read on! First off, the website has a link to Nanuks datasheet for the lock. This contains VERY detailed dimensions. The lock has a 1/4 inch diameter lock bolt with a cap that slopes out to diameter of 1/2 inch. Step 1: Ensure your lock hole is at least 1/4 inch in diameter (measure of try to insert a 1/4 bolt in it. Step 2: Ensure your lock hole is LESS THAN 1/2 and has sufficient shoulder area to prevent pulling the lock bolt through it (Try to insert a 1/2 bolt in your lock hole and see how much shoulder area there is in contact with the bolt). Step 3: The tricky part. Make sure the lock bolt is long enough to go all the way through your lock hole and lock into the base. When closed, the 1/4 diameter area of the shaft is 11/16 inches long. Some cases have a flat lip around the lock hole so all you have to do is measure it. My seasoned Pelican 1620 case has a sloped lip around the lock hole. It's 1/2 inch at the front and 1 inch at the back. The lock hole is slightly larger than 1/4 inch. With the sloped face of the lock bolt cap going into the hole, this left me in the might fit category. I bought one and it didn't quite go deep enough to lock. I bought a 1/2 inch counter sink bit and bored out the top of the lock hole SLIGHTLY (VERY soft plastic, drill CAREFULLY). Since the countersink bit has a sloped profile that neatly mates up with the sloped lock bolt cap, I didn't have to drill much at all. (I made sure it had a LITTLE bit of slop. TSA is one of those tip of the funnel jobs, and I doubt they have much time to fiddle with locking a finicky lock) Fits great now!
