Neewer Q4 TTL Flash Strobe

This 400w strobe was such a great value packaged in such a great form factor that I switched from another system. I really like that the Bowens mount is built in, the powerful modeling light, the ease of use, etc. Really glad I made the switch.

I really wanted to like these. But they have some working issues. I have never been a fan of the tube shape for monolights- until now. The Q4 has won a design award and looks uber cool. Without a modifier, it is rock steady on a light stand. That changes completely when, umm, you add the modifier. Tilt that 5' Octabank down, and now you have the weight of both that modifier and the Q4 bending your lightstand (because you weighted it down, right?) or just plain tipping it over (doh!, I forgot) . How about an umbrella, that would be perfect, right? Well, if you like a black box in your round eye catch light, you would be correct. I'm making the case for not using it with a reflective umbrella here, it would probably be just fine for use with a shoot though translucent. How about a huge parabolic? Maybe that would be ok, I don't have one, but I would be thinking that unless you're at 120cm or larger, that weird catchlight will be an issue for you. So who is this stand for? I guess if you're going to be using this unit on a counterweighted boom arm, a shoot through umbrella, or just hard metal reflectors you will be fine. Brolly box (umbrella softdox) probably ok too. But if you plan to use with larger soft box + speeding style modifiers the weight distribution issue is very real on straight up and down stands. If you plan to use with reflective umbrellas, there's that weird black box in the catchlight. It's also pretty heavy. It also is slightly slower to recycle than the AD400. If you shoot commercially, it does not have a color stability mode that might be an issue for you. It looks cool and is cheap. The TTL actually works very well. But it's not a homerun win, the cool new design is not as ergonomically awesome as it would appear. There are photos in the Q4 ads where a photographer is carrying it by the handle with a small octa by his hip. You will never do this without that added handle attachment because you need that to attach to a stand. That assembly- the Q4+handle+light modifier is very weird to se down. You can't put the Q4 on its back without scratching up the screen and back panel. You can't balance it straight up on the handle. You have to put it down with the modifier on the floor. What I'm trying to say, is that in real practice, the flat bottom of the Q4 cube does not allow you to have it sitting carefree on its flat bottom. It's as awkward as any other studio light to work with. Give it a try if you really like it, I just wanted to present some working experiences I had with it.
