With their 42mm objective lenses gathering lots of light and a moderate magnification that presents a wide exit pupil and long eye relief, the Opticron 8x42 Explorer WA ED-R Binoculars offer a superior viewing experience for a wide variety of applications, from hunting to birding and sightseeing. Extra-low dispersion glass lenses, antireflective, fully multicoated optical elements, and phase-corrected BAK4 roof prisms with proprietary high-transmission R-type coatings work together to maximize light transmission and virtually eliminate chromatic and spherical aberrations, producing crisp and clear high-contrast images with true color fidelity across the expansive field of view.
Opticron employs a combination of aluminum alloy and polycarbonate for the chassis to reduce weight without sacrificing strength and overall durability. The body is wrapped with rubber armor for protection from drops and impacts while helping to provide a slip-resistant grip-especially in cold and wet weather. Designed for durability, the housing is nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed for fog and waterproof performance in all types of conditions. Included with the binoculars are two tethered objective lens covers and a one-piece ocular rainguard that attaches to the neck strap so your caps and covers are always within easy reach.
Optical Performance
- Moderate 8x magnification brings subjects in close for viewing without narrowing the field of view and exit pupil or shortening the eye relief, greatly improving viewing comfort
- 42mm objective lenses improve light-gathering ability versus smaller objectives while helping to maintain a compact form factor
- Compact roof prism light path ensures a slim profile without sacrificing performance
- BAK4 prism glass delivers a round exit pupil and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
- Phase-corrected prisms increase image contrast and correct for chromatic aberration for true color rendition
- Proprietary high-transmission R-type prism coatings maximize light transmission, limiting internal diffraction and light loss
- Extra-low dispersion (ED) glass lens elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased contrast and improved color rendition and sharpness without distortion across the entire field of view
- Antireflective, fully multicoated optics maximize light transmission to ensure bright and clear images with accurate colors and improved contrast and clarity
- Relatively short 6.6 minimum focus distance enables detailed observations of small subjects like birds, bugs, flora, and fauna at close distances including flower boxes and feeders
- Wide 60° apparent field of view helps to minimize the appearance of the distracting hand shake that is common when holding high-power optics
- 393 field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling- Closed-bridge configuration provides a stable and strong platform for the internal focusing mechanism
- Large slip-resistant center focusing wheel is easy to manipulate in cold and wet weather, even while wearing gloves
- Locking right-eye dioptric correction allows you to compensate for optical prescription for sharper views and to lock the correction against accidental movement
- Wide 53-73mm interpupillary distance adjustment range enables easy use by a wide variety of users
- Twist-up click-stop eyecups for easy use with or without eyewear
- Integrated 1/4 -20 socket on front of center bridge hinge accepts an optional tripod mount for easy hands-free use to relieve arm fatigue and limit vibrations
- Long 17mm eye relief provides improved viewing comfort and reduced eyestrain during long glassing sessions
- Wide 5.25mm exit pupil will cover pupils as they open and fully dilate in low light to keep the whole scene in view without vignetting
Construction Details- Combination aluminum and polycarbonate chassis reduces weight without sacrificing strength or stability
- Protective rubber armor provides a solid and secure slip-resistant grip
- Nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme changes in temperature and environmental conditions
- Tethered objective lens caps and one-piece ocular rainguard protect the lens surfaces without the fear of losing them when not in use
- Compact at just 5.5 long
- Weight 23.6 ounces
