Daystar Filters 0.4 & half-bandwidth tuned Quantum Sodium Na-D Solar Filter uses its precise micro processor-controlled electronic tuning system to isolate the extremely thin but bright emission line from the Sun s surface continuum to produce highly detailed views of granulations, supergranulations, and P-modes. The filter is installed at the rear of the optical tube assembly (OTA), rather than before the primary objective so it can be used on telescopes of virtually any aperture and easily move between a variety of scopes.
This version of the Quantum is designed for professional research-grade users which require tight tolerances and exceptional quality. To accomplish this, Daystar improves homogeneity and on-band transmittance values across the substrate surface, so these filters require additional quality control steps, as well as additional fabrication and testing times.
It comes calibrated for the Sodium Na-D line at 5895.9 & and is used un-heated for observing the lower two emissions lines, or heated to view the higher two lines. By employing the electronic tuning system, the wavelength can be offset to make Doppler studies possible by photographing in each line and deriving different images after subtracting an average solar velocity image. This process is referred to as a dopplergram velocity image, and reveals the surface motions associated with supergranulation.
Most telescope configurations and styles can be used with no aperture limit, although Daystar recommends using the filter at focal ratios between f/27 and f/35. An optional Powermate Barlow or stop-down mask can be used to get to that f-stop, and an energy rejection filter or UV/IR cut filter must be used to prevent damage to the optical system. The Quantum is outfitted with an RS-232 serial port that allows it to be connected to a computer and enables remote viewing of the wavelength display and control of the tuning. It runs on 12 VDC power and comes with a 6 power cord and a set of international outlet plugs for the US, EU, UK, and Australia. A Q3GFTF Front Flat T-Plate is also included so that users can attach T-rings or snouts, which are available separately, to match their applications with additional plates also available to match user s needs.
