H&Y Filters RevoRing Variable ND3-ND1000 & Circular Polarizer Filter (58-77mm)

I bought this RevoRing from their Kickstarter campaign. They had some praising reviews on Youtube that afterward it seems where all bought to some influencers. The reality of this device is: - It is quite inconvenient to handle, you need both hand to manipulate the RevoRing, and one hand to hold your camera. This is not a problem if you shoot on a tripod exclusively. - It produces a very strong X pattern so it is definitely not usable as a ND3-ND1000, especially for wide-angle lenses, which is quite standard problem for a VND. - The overall build quality seems good at first but after a few months parts start moving a bit here and there. Also sometimes turning the handle for the polarizer turn the whole filter and not just the polarizer. So overall, I think there are better solutions around, like the magnetic filters systems or just a standard screw-in with a step-up ring.

Some person says it dropped off camera but I think it is user error I could lift a Fuji gfx 50s with 45-100mm lens, it is solid

Great concept but doesn't work in real life. 1. Filter falls off all the time and will eventually break. 2. Heavy vignetting in extreme setting. Just save your money.

The optical quality is good, but the system doesn't really work. It fits poorly and falls off all the time, plus vignetting on the corners for example when you use it with a SONY G 24-105. And in the last model they eliminated the front and back cap, which are also impossible to find separately... a disaster.

Step 1: Dial in the Polarizer The first step is to determine if we want to use a polarizer and then adjust or remove it. With the H&Y system, you can install or remove the polarizer without disrupting your critical focus or framing. So let's determine now if we want to use it or remove it. Here are a few scenarios where you should consider deploying a polarizer: Darkening the sky to balance the luminosity of the sky against the terrain below. Increasing the contrast between clouds and blue sky. Removing haze. Removing reflections from foliage, water, or windows. The "right" way to adjust a polarizer is to simply look through the lens and rotate the polarizer until it's providing the results you desire. For your polarizer to perform, the sun needs to be at some angle perpendicular to the lens. If the light rays are traveling in the same direction as the lens, the effect of the polarizer will be minimal. For example, if the sun is rising directly behind the camera, the polarizer has very little or nothing in the sky to polarize. In those instances, you'll need to use a grad filter to darken the sky. I bought the RevoRing on Kickstarter after a series of glowing (sponsored?) reviews by various youtube channels. But the reality was very different when I finally got the filter. While the concept behind the filter is good, it is not very practical in real life. First of all it is very awkward to attach the filter to the lens and take it off. You need to use both your hands to twist the rings to engage the mechanism to mount the filter to the lens. You have to set your camera down somewhere to do this. With the normal filters you can hold the camera in one hand and easily screw in the filters or take them off. So there is absolutely no convenience advantage to using the Revoring. Secondly there is a very strong X-pattern when you use the variable ND after about 5 stops. Basically you have use it as a N3-ND32 filter. But again while shooting videos it is easy to go past the 5-stop mark and you will have the x-pattern show up and ruin the shot. And finally, the spring mechanism to engage the blades is very delicate. I knocked the Revoring against my desk one day and the blades were stuck rending the Revoring unusable. I contacted H&Y support and they asked me to mail them the product to HongKong for them to service it. I sent it to them and they stopped answering my emails when I ask for the status of the repairs. It has been around 4 months since I sent them the product and haven't received any response from them still. So please do not go by the glowing reviews on youtube and think twice before buying this product.

This unit is an All in One filter concept. The multiple adapting ring is brilliant and flawlessly functional. Quick and stable to attach to your lens, functional as advertised, with slight evidence of an X at extreme application of the polarizing and VND feature simultaneously. I am looking forward to years of working with this innovative product.

I was really impressed watching how the instagram adjusted as I adjusted the filter without changing any of the camera settings - I left the shutter, aperture and ISO alone and adjusted the exposure using the filter and it got me excited.
