Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z Lens (Canon RF)

It's huge, as I'm sure everyone has said. For reference, it's about the same size and weight as my EF f2.8 70-200mm. Now that that disclaimer is out of the way, I want to say I LOVE this lens. The 2.8 aperture on such a versatile focal length is absolutely incredible. It's been amazing for both events and street photography alike. If a compact build is not a must, I would definitely recommend picking this lens up as a staple for your kit.

Talk about one of the most versatile lenses on the market. Not just from a storytelling aspect, but also a technical aspect for both photographers and videographers. Fantastic investment for the future.

Much like the R5 C was for cameras, the Canon RF 24-105 f/2.8 is the first TRULY hybrid lens to hit the market 4not to mention the first (and currently only) 24-105 f/2.8 available. It's executed beautifully, and while it is certainly not without flaws, Canon chose the right compromises. The feature set of this lens leans slightly more towards video, most notably the power-zoom feature. But for me, the headline feature is the focus ring. I've used plenty of Arri, Cooke, Tokina, and Zeiss lenses 4all excellent lenses with great mechanical focus rings. You can't directly compare a fly-by-wire focus system to any of those, but I will say this: for my workflow, this lens's focus ring is more functional and has greater utility than any lens I've ever used. It's smooth as heck, has a decent amount of resistance, is incredibly accurate, and has zero play. Tune the dynamics to your preferences in-camera and you're set. I only wish it had gears, or a modular gear adapter, but as a hybrid lens I understand why this was not included. The 11-blade iris does make a visual difference, too, producing a slightly more round bokeh than typical 9-blade irises. In video, shooting any DCI format, there is no vignetting or problematic distortion at any focal length. AF performance is probably the best of any Canon lens thus far, and the three different stabilization modes are VERY useful. In short, this is a killer lens for video. There's not much to complain about at all. For photography, it's a slightly different story. I'll start by saying that this lens does not replace my 24-105 f/4, nor does it really replace the 24/28-70 4for a pretty simple but important reason: Even with Canon's in-camera correction and Lightroom's profile correction, the lens can exhibit some relatively sharp corner vignetting from 24-35mm. It's also been well-established by this point that if you turn the profile off, the image becomes unusable 4but that doesn't bother me so much. The problem is that, in terms of distortion and vignetting, Canon's most expensive (photography-appropriate) wide-to-tele zoom actually performs significantly worse than all of its siblings. If Canon had managed to control vignetting a bit better at 24mm, I would be much happier with the lens overall. That said, compromises are to be expected with any hybrid product, and consumer expectations should be reasonable. The reality is that the small (but abrupt) amount of vignetting in wide photos can be easily cropped away and is entirely non-existent in video. It's a fair tradeoff, but introduces a nagging dissatisfaction that the optics rely so heavily on digital correction in order to be usable at all. But that feeling is not strong enough to discourage a 5-star rating. The rest of the lens's optical and physical performance is consistent with Canon's high standards; great sharpness, robust built, weather sealing, etc. It's incredibly utilitarian and checks more boxes than it leaves empty. I love It, but if you are a photographer and don't shoot video 4I'd encourage you to pass. The difference between 70 and 105 is not as dramatic as it seems, and I do think that the optical performance of the 24-70 f/2.8 or the 28-70 f/2 make them a better fit for general photography.

If fits right in the middle of all my other lens. It seems I am using more and more. My 70-200 use to be my go-to lens.

I just purchased this lens to go with my new Canon 5RC camera body. As someone who was using the same EF lenses with my old Canon 5D Mark III's for the last 10 years, this was a monumental upgrade for me. I can't believe the difference it has made in getting more shots in focus and just overall enjoyment of taking photos again. This lens IS big and heavy, but if you have used an EF 70-200 f2.8 L lens before, it is about the same size, but actually slightly lighter in weight. For me, it hasn't been an issue to use. LOVE this lens. Love it.

I've now used this for both stills and on a bts video gig for a large corporate client. This thing is a killer. I love it. SUPER sharp for stills. Extremely versatile for both... So glad I pulled the trigger.
