Kenko KFM-2200 Cine & Flash Meter

The Kenko KFM-2200 Cine & Flash Meter is a digital handheld exposure meter capable of both incident and reflected light measurement, including flash and strobes. The KFM-2200 utilizes a spherical diffuser with a 270° rotation angle for most readings, including the ability to take a 1° spot measurement using the viewfinder. It can then use one of three measurement modes depending on your specific needs.

For working with both cinema and still photography use, there are a variety of additional settings, especially a large selection of shutter speeds from 30 minutes to 1/16000 second. It even features a flash sync terminal for metering your strobes for still photography. Also, it can display an aperture range from f/1.0 to f/128 and 9/10.

The digital LCD display is backlit to increase readability and shows a variety of parameters, each of which can be set to determine proper exposure values for your camera settings. The KFM-220 also features a viewfinder with diopter adjustment for taking spot measurements of reflected light. It includes a soft case and strap for storage and travel.

I've been using Minolta meters for over 30 years, from the Spotmeter F to the Flashmeter Auto Meter IIIF, Auto Meter IV F and V F. They're excellent, and to my mind, are more intuitive than some of their competitors over the years. These days, the meters are owned by Kenko, much like Sony bought the Minolta camera and lens line as its starting point. As a commercial and advertising photographer, I meter not only for incident light but for reflective values as well. It helps relative to placing tones that compose the image, especially for background brightness. Having lost my Minolta Spotmeter F at some point, and having a few issues getting accurate spot readings from the 5 degree spot attachment to the Flashmeter Auto IV F that I've owned for over 20 years, I needed a solution. The idea of one handheld meter handling both reflective and incident light without attachments appealed to me. A few days ago after reading up on it, I purchased the Kenko KFM 2200 with a great deal of anticipation. I love this meter! But I almost didn't love it. A key feature for which I bought it didn't seem to exist - spot metering of flash! I was ready to return it for that alone. Nowhere in the published material does it say that in the non-cord mode (i.e. not attached by cable to the strobe), the spot meter function does not work. That fact was revealed to me by repeated ERR messages in the display as I attempted to take my first spot readings. Finally reading the manual, in small print on the non-cord page of the owner's manual it says it will not read spot flash in non-cord mode. I checked in the mode called cord (connected by cable) on the off chance that it might add insight. It never directly says for spot meter readings use cord mode, but it doesn't say it won't work as it does for non-cord. So I dug out an old PC cord with the mini pin to attach the meter to a Flashpoint Xplor 600BM and tested it. Voila!! It fires 600BM perfectly, is accurate and convenient with the exception of needing that darned cord. I certainly wish the technical writers of the KFM 2200 manual had been more explicit, which is why I'm writing this, in case anyone else has been wondering about spot metering flash with this unit. I'm every bit as pleased with it now, as I'd hoped to be when I decided to upgrade.

I have had vey little experience with using light meters. As a result the first set I took it to, I put it in my sport coat pocket even though it has a strap to hang around your neck. So what happened... I had previously checked some ambient light settings outside that day on location, then went inside to shoot and took another set of readings. without storing the first set in memory. I set the camera for the indoor flash sequence and waited for the show to begin. I got too warm and took my sport coat off and hung it in the back of the Chapel. Upon completion of the ceremony I went out to catch the party exiting then proceeded to the lawn for group pics. Yes, leaving the meter in my coat pocket hanging in the Chapel. I remembered the approximate settings previously taken and reset the camera still applying flash to a skyline background setting. The camera histogram showed over exposure because of the skyline background and chimpping the LCD screen was useless outside. I continued shooting with small variations to settings hoping for the best. Surprisingly the indoor flash shots were the best I had ever shot and the outdoor shots only required a small amount of exposure correction in post-prep. I was thoroughly pleased with the outcome and am practicing new technics for hanging it on my person for future use. I have not yet used the average feature but am anxious to try the accuracy of it. The spot, ambient and N Cord are very easy and accurate with wonderful light setting results. A wonderful addition to take the experimental factor out of camera settings when you have to set and shoot... I am sure that there are probably small (maybe one stop variations) from camera to camera or lens to lens performance but the meter will give a range of three or four stops that will all be within the proper parameters of correct settings. As a novice meter user I found it delightfully easy and surprisingly accurate. I will be using it more often. This devise seems rugged, and durable yet the controls respond well and buttons are protected by a recessed design.
