The release is instant-on/instant off and small enough to attach to a monopod/selfie-stick for one-hand operation. A tripod/stick mount improves output from this device- hand-held photos are possible but contain a poorly spliced version of your hand at close range. Sure, in a pinch, you could connect to the Theta over wifi to trigger the shutter change settings, but it's a super hassle that takes up to a minute and drains 5% of your phone's battery every time. No sensible professional photographer would interact with their camera 100% of the time over a wifi app. The remote shutter is much better for short-range connections (honestly- most of your photos with a 360-cam). Minor quibble: at 40, this should be bundled with at least one cheap micro-USB cable. Or bundled with a selfie-stick it could be removed from.
