GC Audio Realism Preamp Overview
An ideal choice for the quietest possible operation in professional recording scenarios, the Realism Preamplifier from GC Audio is a 500-series differential mic and instrument preamp sporting whisper-quiet SSM 2212 paired transistors and Texas Instruments OPA1612 op-amps. Providing up to 66 dB of perfectly clean gain, and a convenient front-panel XLR-1/4" combo input, the Realism preamp is built for flawless recording, time after time.
Great care was taken in selecting the components of the Realism preamp, including the capacitors, the high-grade Wima plastics, the low-ESR Nichicon Long Life electrolytic compounds, and the coupling and decoupling links which are optimized for a desirable impulse response. The output stage sports a Lundahl transformer for a smooth presence. Onboard controls include a 120 Hz high-pass filter, a -20 dB input pad, a phase inverter, selectable +48V phantom power for condenser mics, and a dedicated output blend control knob. With 10-segment LED meter, you can easily keep an eye on your levels at all times, from -20 up to +3 dB.
Quality Components
To ensure extremely low noise and the best possible performance, the Realism preamp is packed with carefully chosen components. The SSM 2212 are well regarded for their low-noise operation, and the Texas Instruments OPA1612 op-amp is widely considered among the quietest analog op-amps on the market.
The output balancing stage consists of a Lundahl high-output transformer preceded by a solid low-output impedance current generator stage. The very few uH generated naturally by the output coil of the transformer brings presence and a feeling of proximity.
Relay Switches
No sound passes through the front-panel switches. Each switch drives a gold contact mechanical relay or an ultralow R-On solid state relay, further ensuring extra-quiet operation for a preamp that provides great realism in the high frequencies and perfect reproduction of the sharpest transients.
