Chandler Germanium Pre Amp/DI - Microphone Preamplifier
The Germanium Pre Amp/DI from Chandler Limited is a single-channel microphone preamp that utilizes vintage-style germanium transistors, which help it achieve a variety of sounds. Gain and Feedback knobs are provided for setting levels and achieving various tones, as is a Thick button and a -20dB pad button. The Thick button brings out a subtle amount of low end in the signal, and the pad attenuates the input, making it possible to capture loud sounds, such as a cranked-up guitar amp. The pad is also useful for shaping other kinds of sounds. When you attenuate a relatively soft signal, you can then boost them up using various amounts of Gain and Feedback, bringing out interesting sonic characteristics.
The germanium transistors are used in a class A, transformer balanced circuit. An unbalanced 1/4 instrument input is available on the front panel for directly connecting guitars and basses. Phase Reverse and 48V phantom power buttons are also provided on the face of the unit, as well as a ten-segment LED meter. Input and output connections are provided on the back with balanced XLR jacks. The separately available Chandler Limited PSU-1 MKII power supply is required to operate this unit. Asingle PSU-1 MKII is capable of powering two Germanium Pre Amp/DI units.
