The RNLA7239 Really Nice Levelling Amplifier from FMR Audio is a stereo compressor in a 1/3 rack size with 5-parameter controls, and is designed to level a signal rather than tame every transient. It can be used on several instruments such as bass guitar, drums and other sources in need of added sonic texture.
The compressor has two 1/4 unbalanced inputs that also double as TRS inserts to mate with mixers and equipment inserts. Balanced outputs give your audio the benefit of reduced noise. Reminiscent of classic opto compressors and admittedly much gentler to the signal, the RNLA7239 compressor is a little resistant to responding right away and requires the signal to be there for a while. This action adds a desirable characteristic to the source signal.
Threshold
This control sets the input signal amplitude at which the RNLA will start compressing. When turned counterclockwise, the RNLA will compress quieter signals. When turned clockwise, the RNLA requires hotter signals before it will begin compression.
Ratio
Determines how much the RNLA will change the output signal as the input signal changes over threshold. Turning this control counterclockwise decreases the difference between the compressor s output and input signals. Turning this control clockwise increases the difference between the compressor s output and input signals.
Attack Time
This control sets how fast the RNLA will try to correct the input signal after it hits the threshold level.
Release Time
Controls how fast the RNLA will return to the gain setting just after the input signal decreases below the threshold level.
Gain
Makes up the average gain loss which occurs during normal compression. However, it can also be used to match gain levels to subsequent stages, etc.
Gain Reduction Meter
The meter shows the current amount of gain reduction being applied to the input signal.
Log Rel
Invokes the default normal mode or a mode with an increased release curve acceleration. When compressing a fair amount (6 dB or more), transient signals can get swallowed, ducked, or over-compressed. By changing the release characteristics under higher gain reduction amounts, the punchy character of some transient sources can be partially restored.
Bypass
This push button engages or disengages a relay that routes the input signal to the output jacks, bypassing the output of the compressor.
