Audio-Technica PRO 37 Small-Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone

I've used these to record a university orchestra from the first balcony--about 100' from center stage. Did an excellent job with a crisp and well defined sound. Also have used these to record solo violin with good results. I'm not a pro--I recorded either to a Panasonic HVX-200a camcorder or Tascam digital recorder. So I don't know how these compare with the expensive small-diaphragm mics made for acoustic instruments. But I can't complain about my results.

This is my second Pro37, to use as a stereo pair. These are my go-to small-diaphragm condensers for home recording. To my ears they sound especially good going through a tube mic-pre. You're not gonna get the cream/warmth of a vintage KM 84, just a basic transparent sound that gets the job done. My first one cost 130 several years ago, so AT raised the price a bit. Still worth it I think.

This is the second time I am writing a review on PRO37. This microphone became less attractive since the price is doubled recently. I currently have 8 of them. I will purchase several more if the price drops to below again.

I use pro37 for the situations such as recording a big jazz band where each player needs a microphone. I also use this microphone for recording strings and vocals in addition to for horns and drums. In another words, this is an all round microphone. I currently have 7 of this microphone. I will buy more of pro37 as the number of channels of my recorder increases. Goods: 1; Not much colored frequency response. I mix with Earthworks SR20s when I need a larger number of microphones. Sounds from both microphones are nearly undistinguishable in many cases. 2. Good off axis frequency response. 3. Not conspicuous at live recordings. 4. Low cost Negatives: 1. Higher noise floor. This microphone is not usable at distant positions like tens of feet away. But, at proximity positions like within a few feet from the sound source, the microphone noises are not audible in most cases. 2. No brand name value - not usable for people who love Neumann.

This is my first SDC mic.Amazing acoustic sound on a fairly economical budget. I use this at home in a plain bedroom and the guitar sounds amazing, very full bass. I would recommend this to anyone!
