The top part features a captive 1/4 -20 screw for attaching your bracket or flash, while the bottom features a 1/4 -20 female thread in the middle of a cold shoe mount. This configuration allows you to mount the adapter directly to the hot shoe of your camera, on an accessory cold shoe, or to any 1/4 -20 screw depending on your needs.
